Malta (5) - Malta at night

After returning home we were asked if we liked Malta. Well, it was nice even though it wasn't one of our best vacations ever. The weather was fabulous most of the time, food was yum and the wine was delicious and cheap. And whenever we were not busy enjoying either of them we were out for some nightshots.

Valletta's famous skyline, seen from Sliema Seafront
Former capitol Birgu, seen from Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valetta

Misrah Ir-Repubblika, Valetta: Queen Victoria statue and National Library of Malta
during daytime a great place to enjoy a glass of Aperol Spritz (bitter orange liqueur with Prosecco)

Side view of St. John's Co-Cathedral at Triq San Gwann, Valetta
New Parliament Building, Valetta

All over Malta there's always a "festa" where the local saint is celebrated. Everything is illuminated and even the churches look as if it was Christmas. This one was the Feast of St Publius in Floriana.

Somehow we were with the fairies at times on our vacation. In addition to the nearly missed harbour cruise we also got completely mixed up with the visit to the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni. While waiting for the bus I checked my emails once more and suddenly realized that our pre-booked tickets were actually valid for the next day.

At this stage I should mention that public transport in Malta is absolutely fabulous. By bus you will literally get everywhere on the island, the buses run very frequent and stick to their schedule. The fare for a single ride is less than 2€ and that is more than acceptable. In this regard Ireland looks like a developing country.

So, while realizing our mistake we simply decided to get on the next bus to Rabat and Mdina. These two cities are located nearly in the heart of the island and they are only separated by a main road.

South of that main road you will find Rabat. The main points of interest are most certainly the St. Paul's and St. Agatha's Catacombs. These two cave systems date back to the early 2nd century and were once used for burial of the deceased. They are definitely a must-see. Of course we ended up in the wrong place at first. We were just following the signposts and when the catacombs were signposted to the left and to the right we followed that direction that also mentioned the St. Paul's Grotto. Also a nice place to see but not what we were looking for in the first place. It is said that St. Paul stayed here for three months in 60 AD. The conjoined catacombs played a significant role during WWII and are also worth to see. The admission fee allows you also to visit the Wignacourt Museum - we left that out.

Instead we walked into the historic city of MdinaDuring the Middle Ages Mdina used to be capitol city of Malta but lost its importance when Birgu became capitol in 1530. This goes along with the fact that there have been nearly no changes to the city since then and when you imagine the medieval streets without the few (but annoying) cars you almost feel like being in a different era. It doesn't surprise that a few scenes of Game of Thrones' first season were actually shot here. Today only a very small number of people still lives in Mdina. The number of tourists that conquer the city every day is a lot higher than that. Mdina is located at the edge of a plateau and that already gives you a stunning view while approaching the city. Unfortunately I couldn't take a picture of this view out of the driving bus. But we had coffee and cake in a very nice place with a picturesque view over the lowlands - it actually reminded me of a famous beer garden in Bavaria. And even if that trip was rather spontaneous and more or less ill-conceived it was a perfect day.

Malta (3) - Wind und Meer / Wind and the sea

It wouldn't be an island if you wouldn't get to the water sooner or later. And in this regard we discovered a few nice places too.

While driving around the island with a rental car we came to Marsaxlokk in the East of Malta. Marsaxlokk is a rather small but very picturesque fisherman's village and its harbour is one of the very famous Maltese postcard scenes. The harbour with its crystal-clear turquoise water is packed with the beautiful traditional wooden fisherman's boats ("Luzzu"). The boats are painted in shining colours and the pair of eyes at the bow are meant to protect the fisherman from all dangers at sea.

In the South you will find the Blue Grotto which is accessible by boat. Due to rough sea conditions there were no boats running when we were there. Even though we had beautiful sunny and warm weather at the beginning of April there were a few days with strong winds. And therefore our harbour cruise around Valetta was also at risk until the very end. The morning before our departure the boats finally operated again and we nearly missed ours as I insisted to wait at the wrong pier. In the end everything went well and we were happy enough to enjoy a splashy cruise with stunning views on Valetta and its surrounding cities. What a pity if we would have missed that.

Malta (2) - Alte Steine / Ancient stones

If you have to describe Malta briefly than you can probably do it by its ancient stones, there are plenty. The first settlers arrived from Sicily about 5200 BC and within the next 2500 years Malta developed one the oldest and most impressive megalithic cultures in the world. About 40 neolithic temples have been discovered in Malta and the adjacent island Gozo and this number in relation to the area is what makes Malta that special. There is no doubt that we had to visit as many temples as possible during our vacation.

Left: Mnajdra Temple, Right upper: Hagar Qim, Right Lower: Cart Ruts at Clapham Junction

Chr. stammen.

At Malta's south coast there are two impressive temples within spitting distance: Hagar Qim and Mnajdra. Hagar Qim dates back to 3000 BC and differs in its shape from all other temples in Malta. Usually all temples are built of two or three oval rooms aligned in a row of which the first is the biggest. In Hagar Qim there are six oval rooms with separate entrances that were once surrounded by 8 metres high wall. The oldest part of Mnajdra is even 500 years older. In total there are three non-connected temples of which one archway is that famous that it made it onto Malta's 1-, 2- and 5-cent-piece.

Only a few kilometres further up the coast you will find Clapham Junction. Nobody really knows what these parallel furrows are about. Some of them run for several kilometres. The Maltese seem to follow one of the various theories that these would be cart ruts as they signpost that on their (very rare) traffic signs. It is for sure that they date back to 2000 to 1000 BC.

Not far from Valetta you will find the Tarxien Temples. This complex consists of three connected temples that date back to 3000 BC. Tarxien is most impressive because of the numerous skilful archaeological finds. I have to say that we (opposed to our guidebook) kind of liked the location in the middle of a residential area. I also think that Tarxien Temples were our overall favourite. By the way, all temples that we visited on our vacation have been roofed in the last years to protect them from weather conditions. In Tarxien they should also think about a solution to the problem with all the straying cats.

Within just a few walking minutes you will get to the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni. Don't be scared by the admission fee of approx. 30€ per Person. It is definitely worth it. The Hypogeum is a cave system over three levels and was used as a burial place. Between 3600 and 2500 BC it is supposed that about 30,000 were buried in these chambers. You can only visit the Hypogeum with a guided tour, no more than 10 people are allowed in there at the same time. To protect the caves they also only illuminate the area where you are at the moment and there is a strict no-photography-policy. If you're interested you will find some pictures in the internet. Also, if you intend to visit make sure you have your tickets booked online way in advance.

Malta (1) - Valetta

As we all know summer in Ireland is a story on its own. It is said there was a heatwave just around the corner but we're still waiting for it. Just to be sure we planned a holiday in the sunny South a while ago and went to Malta for a few days at the beginning of April.

You may know that I like to be well prepared and so I started my research well in advance. Malta has a very diverse history and over the centuries (and even millennia) many civilizations left their footprints behind. Most of all Malta has a Mediterranean character, it is also influenced by the Arabians, the French and the British who ruled over Malta until its independence in the 1960s. Particularly important for Malta's cultural development were the knights of the Order of St John who renamed themselves to Order of Malta after relocation in the 16th century.

When we were looking for accommodation we ended up in Sliema opposite of Valetta. And wherever we wanted to go we had to make our way with a stopover in the capital city. With less than 6000 residents Valetta is just a tiny city, in fact it is just the top of the peninsula. Obviously Maltese people define their city limits very precisely while you will only recognize a seemingly endless capital region where two thirds of Malta's whole population lives. Picture that traffic chaos.

Großmeisterpalast / Palace of the Grand Master

Wen's interessiert... Ich bin ja nun mal nicht so der Museums-Typ...

The Palace of the Grand Master was built in the 18th century and hosted the most powerful personality in Malta since. Until the conquest by Napoleon in 1798 it was the Grand Master of there Order of Malta, from 1800 on it was the British governor. Today it is the domicile of Malta's president. You will only be allowed to visit a handful of rooms as well as the Order's armoury (after death all knight's belongings devolved to the Order). It was okayish, but I'm not into museums anyway...

Johanneskathedrale / St. John's Co-Cathedral

The exterior of St. John's Co-Cathedral is rather simple. But when you go inside you will be quite surprised. The cathedral is massive, the arched ceiling is fascinating and the floor is covered with 375 marble plates under which the Order's knights rest in peace. You might doubt that with millions of visitors clumping on their bones. At both aisles there are together 8 chapels, one for every Langue of the Order of Malta - this is why there are 8 tops in the Maltese cross. The admission fee of 10.- € per adult is quite high but definitely worth it.

Lower & Upper Barrakka Gardens

The Lower and Upper Barrakka Gardens are a fabulous view point for the Grand Harbour and the "Three Cities" on the other side of the bay. It's gorgeous and a must-do. Unfortunately you can only enjoy it during daytime as the gardens will close at night.

Sacra Infermeria

Sacra Infermeria used to be the hospital of the knights. It was in a strategic location as it had easy access to the sea. It was also well known for its hygienic standards that were way above the usual standards at that time. If you are interested in having a look into the Great Ward where they treated up to 300 patients in individual beds (!) at the same time you have to join "Malta Experience". Of course we didn't get that and ended up only visiting the hospital museum. More or less by accident and only half-legal we could catch a glimpse into the banquette hall below the Great Ward. I even got nearly locked-in in there...

Unsere Grüne Insel / Green Ireland (33) - Kilbeggan Distillery

Jahrhunderts drastisch an Bedeutung verloren.

Cheers!

I think the exact words of my mother in law were "Soon, you'll have them all."

Yes, I am talking about whiskey distilleries.

After visiting Tullamore (County Offaly), Midleton (County Cork) and Bushmills (Northern Irish County Antrim) we visited another distillery in Kilbeggan (County Westmeath) on our way home from Westport. And in fact, there's not that much left to visit in Ireland.

Whiskey in its origin is a 100% Irish invention. "Uisce beatha" (Water of Life) was the name given to the whiskey that was produced by Irish monks in the early Middle Ages. Irish whiskey was something very special for a very long time even before distilleries started to spread all over the world. Until the early 20th century it was indeed the world's market leader.

Due to economical problems, conflicts with the UK and the prohibition in the USA Irish whiskey became less important in a dramatic way. Distilleries all over the country were closed or merged and for years all Irish whiskey was produced in the only working distillery in Midleton.

Kilbeggan Distillery was first founded in 1757 and is therefore one of the oldest licensed distilleries in the world. Within its first years ownership changed quite often until it was bought by John Locke in 1860. It remained family owned until its close-down in 1957. Thirty years later it was bought by the Cooley Distillery and the old distillery was reopened as a museum. Since 2007 a very small part of Kilbeggan whiskey is also produced here again in the world's oldest still working pot still from the early 19th century. The rest comes as well as the other brands from Cooley Distillery in County Louth, which in the meantime has been bought by Jim Bean which was taken over by the Japanese company Suntory. However, in Kilbeggan they are very proud to stick to the roots and produce their whiskey nearly the same traditional way it was done for centuries.

Visiting Kilbeggan you will have different options: You can either discover the old distillery by yourself or you can join a guided tour. Our tour guide was very entertaining when guiding us through the distillery. Of course we picked the tour that ends with tasting of 3 different whiskeys (Silver Medal Tour). And guess what... Of course my collection is extended again by a bottle of 8 year old single malt Locke's whiskey. Cheers!

Now I wrote so much about the surrounding area that the only thing missing is Westport itself.

In 2012 Westport won the Irish Times competition for the "Best Place to Live in Ireland". Whether that's right or not I might not be able to say. But it is for sure that we really liked Westport and it definitely is one of the most beautiful cities in Ireland we've seen so far.

Westport is a small city and easy to discover, it only has about 5,500 citizens. Tourist attractions are rare, the main attraction is the amazing countryside all around Westport. You will find everything: bogs, mountains, beaches and bays with small islands. There is also "Westport House" which we didn't visit. Opinions on Westport House might differ. Anyway I just read that they are going to sell the estate with the attached little kids-fun park.

Another thing to do could be a cruise in Clew Bay. The start of season however was postponed until further notice so we couldn't enjoy it.

The actual "city centre" (clockwise one-way system throughout) starts at the Mall, an alley that frames Carrowbeg River. In summer the bridges are all dressed up with flowers, but for us it was too early in the year. Walking along Bridge Street you will get to the Clock Tower, maybe Westport's most famous sight. Shop Street will bring you to the next square, the Octagon with the St. Patrick's statue. And if you turn right again on to James Street you will come back to the Mall. As I said Westport is a small city. But there is also Westport harbour with all its hotels, restaurants and bars and that's not too bad either.

In general it is quite striking that there are so many (and most of all good) restaurants and pubs in Westport. You will also find a huge number of small home bakeries, cafés and tea rooms. You won't be successful when you look for big chains like Starbucks, Costa Coffee and McDonald's. If only Westport had a cinema... But we heard that there are plans to reopen the old (in fact pretty modern) cinema.

So, is Westport really the Best Place to Live in Ireland? Go and find out yourself, it's worth it. All I can say is that our week in Mayo on Ireland's west coast was so much more enjoyable than our recent trip to Malta. Anyway, this is what I will tell you about next.

Unsere Grüne Insel / Green Ireland (31) - Great Western Greenway

Retrospectively I have to admit that we were very lucky with the weather on the west coast - against all odds. On Friday we had sunshine with more or less pleasant temperatures most of the time. That's a bit non-Irish but perfect for a bicycle tour.

At the end of 19th century Achill was connected to Westport by a railway. This railway line exited only for less than fifty years but in 2010 the Great Western Greenway was opened on its former course. With its 43.5km each way it is the longest bike trail in Ireland.

It feels as if there was a shop to hire a bike at every corner in Westport. I think most of them offer a shuttle service to or from Achill as well. And I also think it would be wise to make a booking a few days in advance in high season. We decided to take the shuttle to Achill and cycle back to Westport - with the wind, not against.

Map taken from official homepage www.greenway.ie

The first two sections from Achill to Mulranny and from Mulranny to Newport were really great.  You will find every scenery you can imagine. At this stage the trail is completely off-road but here and there it consists of sustained grade.

The last section from Newport to Westport is rather dull. You either cycle on or alongside the road and current road works half way don't improve things - maybe they will in the future!?

In total it took us little less than four hours and my bum was quite sore. Jan, this show-off, didn't have the slightest pain, but in all fairness he cycles every day to and from work.

After our daily tea and cake it was still early and the weather was too good to go home so we started to have a look at other options. In the end we decided it was beach time. So we drove to two very nice beaches on the foot of Croagh Patrick. Carrownisky Strand is located directly on the Atlantic ocean. It has a beautiful view on Clare and Inisturk Island and is very famous amongst surfers. Bertra Beach on the other hand is located within Clew Bay and impresses with its extensive sand dune and the view on all the small islands within the bay.

Unsere Grüne Insel / Green Ireland (30) - Kylemore Abbey

Undoubtedly Kylemore Abbey is one of Ireland's most famous tourist attractions. It is located in Connemara in county Galway, not even 50km southwest of Westport. On your way you will pass through stunning sceneries that can be completely different behind the next bend. You will even pass a very picturesque fjord (Killary).

Kylemore Abbey is located at the edge of Connemara National Park, the second smallest of the 6 Irish National Parks. Inspired by our new hiking and walking tour guide we decided to go on the Mweelin Mountain Hike. It was said to be a bit difficult and would take up to 4 hours. You would also need good hiking boots and a bit of experience. After about 45mins we surrendered. It ist definitely not a walk in the park, it is really steep and a path is just not existing. Also later on we found out that this climb would take up to 7 hours. The gentle ascent of Diamond Hill starting at the visitor centre in Letterfrack would have been the better choice.

Instead we spent some time on the abbey's ground. The estate was first built in the middle of the 19th century by the Londoner Mitchell Henry after he and his wife fell in love with the region of Connemara. His wife passed away only a few years after completion of the main castle and her ashes were buried in the mausoleum. In memory of his late wife Henry built a neo-Gothic cathedral. Part of the estate was also a massive Victorian walled garden. Mitchell Henry was very important for the whole region even though his estate was his own financial ruin in the end. At the beginning of the 20th century the property changed its owner a couple of times and decayed with everyone of them a little more. In 1920 the estate was finally purchased by the nuns of Benedictine order who had to flea their abbey in Belgium after World War One. They still own it at present and until 2010 they led a prestigious international renown girls school. The school had to shut down due to "social changes" just another nice description for "church scandal". The most impressive thing however is probably the very well known view at the abby that lays immovable at the bank of Pollacappall Lough.

Afterwards we decided to drive a little further to Clifden, a typical Irish small town. It won't take you more than just a few minutes to discover the city centre. If you ask us, the only point of interest in Clifden is Sky Road, a panoramic road of 11km length just outside Clifden. There you will find the ruins of Clifden Castle (you will have to risk your life for the perfect angle for a nice picture) as well as several view points where you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way once again.

Unsere Grüne Insel / Green Ireland (29) - Achill Island

When we woke up on Wednesday morning it was dark, grey and raining - typical bad Irish weather. It was a perfect day for doing very little. That's what we thought...

Ireland has 4 National Museums of which 3 are based in Dublin. The fourth, the "National Museum of Ireland - Country Life", is located near Castlebar, capitol of county Mayo. On a day with good weather it would have been hard for anybody to talk me into museum. And even though it was a bit overloaded and not as much structured as it could have been I liked it.

Afterwards we drove to Newport, a very small town - more or less just a village - 10km north of Westport. The only reason was the very famous award-winning black pudding from the local butcher. At some stage I could convince Jan of its deliciousness and we had a fabulous dinner with black pudding, caramelised apples on baby spinach.

And while we were enjoying our tea and cake in the village café the sun decided to show up as well. That was the end of our lazy day...

It only took us a blink of an eye to decide to drive around Achill, Ireland's largest island. And it was definitely worth it.

Once the whole region was ruled by the "pirate queen" Grace O'Malley. The ruins of her "castle" were our first stop, followed by numerous wild and romantic beaches and view points for rocks and cliffs with spectacular breakers. On Achill streets can be very narrow and you should always keep in mind to give way to sheep - there are plenty!

Unsere Grüne Insel / Green Ireland (28) - Croagh Patrick

If you're in Westport then most certainly you will have difficulties not to see Croagh Patrick, holy mountain of Ireland. In fact you will see its very impressive triangular shape from nearly everywhere.

Toller Typ. Kein Wunder, dass wir alljährlich am 17. März auf ihn trinken.

It is said that in 441 Saint Patrick climbed the top of the mountain and stayed there for 40 days fasting. And by the way he also erected a chapel and - can you believe it - by throwing down a bell he expelled all snakes from Ireland. What a guy. It's not a wonder that every year on 17th March we have the one or another pint on him.

The summit is 764m above sea level and you will start the ascent at the visitor centre in Murrisk at 23m above sea level. That means that on a distance of 3.5km you will have to climb 740m difference in altitude on stony ground. The last stage is very steep. I can't understand how people manage to hike in trainers and without sticks. Every last Sunday in July is Reek Sunday where approx. 25,000 pilgrims climb the mountain, some of them even barefoot or on all fours.

For the devotional pilgrim there are also very detailed instructions where and how often to pray the 'Our Father‘ or ‘Hail Mary' or how often to run around which rock. We simply did the ascent and descent without any fuss. With a lot of stops for taking pictures and the one or another breather it took us nearly exactly 4 hours. And - believe it or not - Saint Peter was with us. Another summit to be ticked off on our list.

Unsere Grüne Insel / Green Ireland (27) - Ballycroy National Park

When you're visiting Ireland's west coast then you'll probably do it because of the fascinating nature and countryside. We thought it would be a nice and easy thing to start in the Ballycroy National Park.

The park was founded in 1998 and is Ireland's youngest national park. Its size of 110 sq km is a good average within the 6 Irish national parks. The special thing about Ballycroy is that it contains one of Europe's largest remaining bogs. In the quite new visitor centre (opened in 2009) we got excellent information about hiking trails and once again our plans were too eager.

Located on the N59 between Ballycroy and Mallaranny is a small car park with a viewpoint for Claggan Mountain. Also it's the start for a rather short but very nice boardwalk through the bog. Once the whole region was forested and today you can still see beautiful ancient tree roots deep in the bog or on the beach were you will head back to the car park.

Afterwards we followed the signs to the beach of Mallaranny. Of course we went for another walk. And - just like little kids - we were trying to defeat the high tide with ditches and walls but without shovels and in the end without success. Time was flying by and so we ended up not hiking the Letterkeen Loop Walk. But we are on holidays and who knows, there are still some days left...
