Ein Ausflug ging nach Ribe und Esbjerg. Und dort mussten wir auf Wunsch eines einzelnen Herren - ja, ich war es - am "Mensch am Meer"-Denkmal anhalten.
Am Morgen hatte ich den Kindern schon ein Bild dieses Denkmals gezeigt und einen kurzen Impuls als Tagesstart dazu gegeben: Menschen, die hinaus aufs Meer schauen, hinaus in das Neue, das (weit) Entfernte, das Unbekannte, das was vor Ihnen liegt. Sie kehren dem was hinter ihnen liegt den Rücken, vielleicht wehmütig, vielleicht mit Reue, vielleicht froh etwas hinter sich zu lassen.
Letztes Jahr habe ich beschlossen, wegen unseres Umzuges nach Irland, die Jugendfreizeiten hinter mir zu lassen. Aber irgendwie gelingt mir das nicht. Da waren noch so ein paar Urlaubstage die verplant werden mussten. Und jetzt ratet mal, was ich in einem Monat machen werde...
Four years ago I went - again - as a youth leader to a holiday camp organised by my old parish in Hanover. We spent one week in Rømø looking into the subject of "Lust & encumbrance", have played games, made bicycle tours and excursions.
One of these excursions headed to Ribe and Esbjerg. And there, as one particular man demanded - yes, it was me - we had to stop at the "Man at Sea" monument.
In the morning I had already shown a picture of this monument to the children and gave them a short impulse to begin the day: men looking at the sea, at the new, the far distance, the unknown, that what lies ahead. They turn their backs to what lies behind them, perhaps wistfully, perhaps with regret, perhaps glad to leave something behind.
Last year I decided to leave these holiday camps behind as we were relocating to Ireland. But somehow I can't manage. There were still a couple of annual leave days left. And now guess what I will do next month...
