Unsere Grüne Insel / Green Ireland (26) - Birr Castle

Es ist eine Ewigkeit her, dass ich etwas veröffentlicht habe, Heiligabend zuletzt. Ob es in der Zwischenzeit nichts zu berichten gab? Doch eigentlich schon, eine ganze Menge um genau zu sein. Aber irgendwie hat mir in den letzten Monaten einfach die Motivation gefehlt. Keine kreative Pause, keine Schreibblockade - einfach mal keine Lust! Aber jetzt werde ich nachholen, Material gibt's genug.

Am Samstag sind wir in den Urlaub gefahren, wir sind auf der Insel geblieben. Westport im County Mayo an der Westküste ist unser Ziel. Darüber werde ich in den kommenden Tagen berichten. Auf dem Weg dorthin haben wir (nach einem kurzen Zwischenstop im Outlet Shopping Centre Kildare) eine weitere Sehenswürdigkeit auf unserer Liste "abgearbeitet": Birr Castle.

It is ages ago that I published something, Christmas Eve to be correct. You might think there was nothing to be mentioned in the meantime but in fact I just had no motivation. It was no creative rest, no writer's block - I just didn't feel like it. There's an awful lot to catch up with and all my excited readers (I know there are a few out there) can be assured - I will.

On Saturday we went on holidays within the country, heading towards Westport, Co Mayo at the west coast of Ireland. I will tell you about Westport and Mayo within the next days but let me begin with Birr Castle another sight that we could finally tick off our list as a stopover (after another stop in Kildare Outlet Shopping Centre).

Birr Castle liegt in der gleichnamigen Kleinstadt im County Offaly, ziemlich in der Mitte des Landes. Seit dem 12. Jahrhundert steht an dieser Stelle ein Schloss. Das heutige wurde im 17. Jahrhundert von den Grafen von Rosse errichtet und ist heute noch immer in Familienbesitz (des 7. Grafen), bewohnt und eigentlich nie zu besichtigen. Die umliegenden Gärten sind aber sehr sehenswert. Berühmt ist vor allem auch das Teleskop, dass der 3. Graf von Rosse errichten ließ, und das von 1845 bis 1917 das größte Teleskop der Welt war.

Eine Wissenschafts-Ausstellung gibt es auch zu besichtigen. Ob die sich lohnt? Keine Ahnung. Wir haben es vorgezogen uns nach dem ausgedehnten Spaziergang (mit zwei kleinen Regenschauern) im angeschlossenen Café mit Tee und Scones zu stärken um dann unsere Reise fortzusetzen.

Birr Castle is located in the small town of the same name in county Offaly almost in the middle of Ireland. There has been a castle since the 12th century, the present one dates back to the 17th century. Today it is still owned by the 7th Earl of Rosse who lives in this castle and therefore it hardly can be visited. The surrounding gardens though are worth a visit as well as the big telescope built by the 3rd Earl of Rosse. The telescope used to be the world's largest from 1845 until 1917.

There is also a science exhibition to be seen. Is it worth the visit? Honestly, I have no clue... After our walk through the gardens, two rain showers included, we preferred to energize ourselves with tea and scones in the café before continuing our route.
