Die Irish Times hat Westport 2012 zum lebenswertesten Ort in Irland gekrönt. Ob das berechtigt ist oder nicht mag ich nicht sagen. Dennoch muss ich ganz klar sagen, dass uns Westport außerordentlich gut gefallen hat und definitiv eine der schönsten Städte in Irland ist, die wir bisher gesehen haben.
Westport ist klein und relativ überschaubar, die Stadt zählt gerade einmal 5.500 Einwohner. Attraktionen gibt es nicht so richtig viele, die Hauptattraktion ist die umgebende Natur, seien es Hochmoore, Berge, Strände oder idyllische Buchten mit kleinen Inseln. Es gibt auch noch "Westport House" das wir nicht besucht haben, aber darüber scheiden sich die Geister. Außerdem habe ich gerade gelesen, dass das herrschaftliche Anwesen mit dem angeschlossenen Vergnügungspark für kleine Kinder verkauft werden soll.
In der Clew Bay kann man außerdem Bootstouren unternehmen. Dieses Vergnügen bliebt uns leider verwehrt weil der Saisonstart für unbestimmte Zeit nach hinten verschoben wurde.
Now I wrote so much about the surrounding area that the only thing missing is Westport itself.
In 2012 Westport won the Irish Times competition for the "Best Place to Live in Ireland". Whether that's right or not I might not be able to say. But it is for sure that we really liked Westport and it definitely is one of the most beautiful cities in Ireland we've seen so far.
Westport is a small city and easy to discover, it only has about 5,500 citizens. Tourist attractions are rare, the main attraction is the amazing countryside all around Westport. You will find everything: bogs, mountains, beaches and bays with small islands. There is also "Westport House" which we didn't visit. Opinions on Westport House might differ. Anyway I just read that they are going to sell the estate with the attached little kids-fun park.
Another thing to do could be a cruise in Clew Bay. The start of season however was postponed until further notice so we couldn't enjoy it.
Der eigentliche Stadtkern (Einbahnstraße im Uhrzeigersinn) beginnt an der Mall, einer Allee, die den Carrowbeg River einschließt. Im Sommer sind die Brücken malerisch blumenbehangen, wir kennen das nur von Bildern. Über die Bridge Street gelangt man zum Uhrenturm, vielleicht dem Wahrzeichen Westports. Weitergehend über die Shop Street gelangt man zum nächsten Platz, dem Octagon mit der St. Patricks Statue. Wenn man von hier aus über die James Street läuft gelangt man wieder zur Mall. Wie schon gesagt, Westport ist klein. Es gibt aber auch noch die Hafengegend, die sich mit all ihren Hotels, Restaurants und Bars durchaus sehen lassen kann.
Generell ist es sehr auffällig, wie viele (vor allem gute) Restaurants und Pubs in Westport zu finden sind. Auch Bäckereien und kleine Cafés bzw. Tea Rooms gibt es an jeder Ecke. Große Ketten wie Starbucks, Costa Coffee und McDonald's wird man vergeblich suchen. Wenn Westport doch bloß ein Kino hätte... Es gibt aber wohl Pläne das alte Kino (was eigentlich sehr modern aussah) wieder zu eröffnen.
Ob Westport wirklich die lebenswerteste Stadt Irlands ist? Überprüft es selbst, es lohnt sich! Ich kann nur sagen, dass uns diese eine Woche in Mayo an der irischen Westküste deutlich besser gefallen hat als unser vorangegangener Urlaub auf Malta! Und über den werde ich als nächstes berichten.
The actual "city centre" (clockwise one-way system throughout) starts at the Mall, an alley that frames Carrowbeg River. In summer the bridges are all dressed up with flowers, but for us it was too early in the year. Walking along Bridge Street you will get to the Clock Tower, maybe Westport's most famous sight. Shop Street will bring you to the next square, the Octagon with the St. Patrick's statue. And if you turn right again on to James Street you will come back to the Mall. As I said Westport is a small city. But there is also Westport harbour with all its hotels, restaurants and bars and that's not too bad either.
In general it is quite striking that there are so many (and most of all good) restaurants and pubs in Westport. You will also find a huge number of small home bakeries, cafés and tea rooms. You won't be successful when you look for big chains like Starbucks, Costa Coffee and McDonald's. If only Westport had a cinema... But we heard that there are plans to reopen the old (in fact pretty modern) cinema.
So, is Westport really the Best Place to Live in Ireland? Go and find out yourself, it's worth it. All I can say is that our week in Mayo on Ireland's west coast was so much more enjoyable than our recent trip to Malta. Anyway, this is what I will tell you about next.
