Heute Morgen sind wir dann in Richtung Reykjavik gefahren. Auf dem Weg dorthin mussten wir einen kurzen Zwischenstopp im hiesigen IKEA einlegen. Warum? Weil wir IKEA mögen, und weil es dort Marabou Schokolade in allen Geschmacksrichtungen gab. Der nächste Stopp war Kringlan, Islands größte Shoppingmall. Es war einfach noch zu früh um zum Hotel zu fahren und einzuchecken.
In Reykjavik sind wir im Hotel Alda abgestiegen. Das ist mal eine ganz andere Kategorie als das letzte Hotel. Und von dort aus haben wir die Innenstadt erkundet. Reykjavik ist nun einmal Zweifels ohne die Hauptstadt aber im Vergleich mit anderen Hauptstädten schon sehr provinziell. Bei der Recherche hat Jan, der vor 20 Jahren schon einmal mit seinen Eltern hier war, mir anfangs das Gefühl vermittelt, Reykjavik sei keinen längeren Aufenthalt wert. Und tatsächlich halten sich die Sehenswürdigkeiten in Grenzen, aber was ich bisher gesehen habe, hat mir sehr gefallen. In der Hallgrimskirkja sind wir auf den Kirchturm gefahren und haben uns die Stadt von oben angesehen. Wie gesagt, viel gibt es nicht zu sehen.
Auf dem Weg haben wir Abstecher zum Rathaus, das am Tjörnin (einem See in der Stadt) liegt, und zur Harpa, dem neuen Konzertgebäude, gemacht. Außerdem waren wir shoppen, haben unsere isländische Weihnachtsbaum-Deko sowie eine Regenhose für mich erstanden. Reykjavik ist gesäumt von vielen kleinen Geschäften, Restaurants, Bars und wirkt sehr lebendig.
Gerade kommen wir von einem fantastischen Abendessen im Old Iceland Restaurant zurück. Zum Nachtisch hatte ich einen isländischen Whisky, der brandneu ist. Bei unserer Urlaubsvorbereitung hatte ich schon davon gelesen, aber da war er noch nicht erhältlich. Geschmacklich hat er mich absolut überzeugt und ich hoffe, dass ich bei der Rückreise noch eine Flasche davon am Flughafen bekommen werde.
Jetzt wollen wir aber noch einmal schnell los um ein paar tolle Nachtaufnahmen von der Harpa zu machen.
After an eventful weekend we arrived in Iceland late last night. I was completely dead beat. Compared to German time it was already 2am, I was tired, the airport was totally busy and this huge duty free shop (while entering the country!) asked too much of me. When we finally got our rental car we didn't drive that much anymore, the first night we stayed in Hotel Keflavik.
Today we headed towards Reykjavik, but on the way we had to stop at IKEA. Why? Because we really love IKEA and they had all different flavours of Marabou chocolate. And we stopped at Kringlan, Iceland's largest shopping centre. It would just have been to early for check in to our hotel.
This night we stay at Hotel Alda - and this is definitely something else than our last hotel. From there we started our sightseeing tour. About 20 years ago Jan was here before with his parents and when we started to plan this vacation he gave me the feeling Reykjavik wasn't worth a longer stay. But I have to say I really like what I've seen so far. Compared to other capitol cities Reykjavik might not be either huge or that important, but it has a special atmosphere.
We visited Hallgrimskirkja (Iceland's biggest church) and went up to the tower, we admired the model of Iceland in the Town Hall on Lake Tjörnin and we saw Harpa, the new concert hall. Of course we did some shopping too: some Icelandic decorations for our Christmas tree and rain pants for me, I will definitely need them.
Reykjavik has lots of small boutiques, restaurants and bars. We just returned from the Old Iceland Restaurant where we enjoyed a fantastic dinner. For dessert I had an Icelandic whisky. It's brand new and back when we planned our trip it wasn't available at all. I really liked it and I hope I will get a bottle at the airport when we are returning home.
Right now we are about to leave again to see Harpa once more and take some amazing night shots.
