Unsere Grüne Insel / Green Ireland (27) - Ballycroy National Park

Wenn man an die irische Westküste fährt, dann macht man das hauptsächlich wegen der faszinierenden Natur. Einen leichten Einstieg haben wir uns vom Ballycroy Nationalpark versprochen.

Der Park ist erst 1998 gegründet worden und ist damit der jüngste der 6 irischen Nationalparks, mit seiner Größe von 110 km² ist er im guten Mittelfeld. Das Besondere am Nationalpark ist, dass er eines der größten noch erhaltenen Torfmoore in Europa einschließt. Im ziemlich neuen Besucherzentrum in Ballycroy (2009 eröffnet) haben wir uns über die diversen Wandermöglichkeiten informiert und uns viel zu viel vorgenommen. 

When you're visiting Ireland's west coast then you'll probably do it because of the fascinating nature and countryside. We thought it would be a nice and easy thing to start in the Ballycroy National Park.

The park was founded in 1998 and is Ireland's youngest national park. Its size of 110 sq km is a good average within the 6 Irish national parks. The special thing about Ballycroy is that it contains one of Europe's largest remaining bogs. In the quite new visitor centre (opened in 2009) we got excellent information about hiking trails and once again our plans were too eager.

Direkt an der N59 zwischen Ballycroy und Mallaranny gelegen ist ein Parkplatz mit Aussichtspunkt auf den Claggan Mountain. Von hier beginnt ein relativ kurzer aber sehr schöner Plankenweg durch das Moor hindurch. Einst war die ganze Gegend stark bewaldet, tief im Torf und auch am Strand, an dem man zum Parkplatz zurückläuft, sieht man uralte Baumwurzeln in den schönsten Formen.

Anschließend sind wir der Beschilderung zum Strand von Mallaranny gefolgt. Auch hier haben wir natürlich einen ausgedehnten Spaziergang gemacht und haben wie die kleinen Kinder - leider ohne Schaufeln und letzten Endes ohne Erfolg - mit Wassergräben und Wällen gegen die Flut gekämpft. Dabei haben wir soviel Zeit vertrödelt, dass es für den Letterkeen Loop Walk nicht mehr gereicht hat. Aber wir sind ja im Urlaub, und mal schauen, wir sind ja noch ein paar Tage hier...

Located on the N59 between Ballycroy and Mallaranny is a small car park with a viewpoint for Claggan Mountain. Also it's the start for a rather short but very nice boardwalk through the bog. Once the whole region was forested and today you can still see beautiful ancient tree roots deep in the bog or on the beach were you will head back to the car park.

Afterwards we followed the signs to the beach of Mallaranny. Of course we went for another walk. And - just like little kids - we were trying to defeat the high tide with ditches and walls but without shovels and in the end without success. Time was flying by and so we ended up not hiking the Letterkeen Loop Walk. But we are on holidays and who knows, there are still some days left...
