Unsere Grüne Insel / Green Ireland (30) - Kylemore Abbey

Eine weitere Top Touristenattraktion in Irland ist zweifelsohne Kylemore Abbey in der Region Connemara im County Galway, nicht einmal 50km südwestlich von Westport. Auf dem Weg dorthin fährt man durch atemberaubende Landschaften, die sich hinter jeder Kurve ändern können. Selbst ein malerischer Fjord (Killary) lässt nicht lange auf sich warten. 

Undoubtedly Kylemore Abbey is one of Ireland's most famous tourist attractions. It is located in Connemara in county Galway, not even 50km southwest of Westport. On your way you will pass through stunning sceneries that can be completely different behind the next bend. You will even pass a very picturesque fjord (Killary).

Kylemore Abbey selbst liegt am Rande des Connemara Nationalparks, dem zweitkleinsten der 6 irischen Nationalparks. Unser neu erstandenes Wanderbuch hat uns dann auch sogleich zu einer Bergtour inspiert, ein Rundweg über drei benachbarte Gipfel (Mweelin Mountain Hike): angeblich etwas schwierig, Dauer ca. 4 Stunden, Wanderschuhe und Erfahrung erforderlich. Nach einer guten Dreiviertelstunde haben wir aufgegeben. Es ist dann doch eher eine sehr steile Klettertour auf nicht vorhandenen Wanderwegen die bis zu 7 Stunden dauern kann, außerdem zog ein kräftiger Sturm auf. Die Besteigung des Diamond Hill ausgehend vom Besucherzentrum in Letterfrack wäre dann doch ratsamer gewesen.

Kylemore Abbey is located at the edge of Connemara National Park, the second smallest of the 6 Irish National Parks. Inspired by our new hiking and walking tour guide we decided to go on the Mweelin Mountain Hike. It was said to be a bit difficult and would take up to 4 hours. You would also need good hiking boots and a bit of experience. After about 45mins we surrendered. It ist definitely not a walk in the park, it is really steep and a path is just not existing. Also later on we found out that this climb would take up to 7 hours. The gentle ascent of Diamond Hill starting at the visitor centre in Letterfrack would have been the better choice.

Stattdessen haben wir eine ganze Weile auf dem Gelände der Abtei verbracht. Ursprünglich wurde das Anwesen von dem Londoner Mitchell Henry Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts erbaut, nachdem er und seine Frau sich in die Gegend von Connemara verliebt hatten. Margaret Henry verstarb wenige Jahre nach der Fertigstellung und ihre Asche wurde im Mausoleum beigesetzt, außerdem ließ Henry zu ihrem Andenken eine neugotische Mini-Kathedrale errichten. Weiterhin ließ er einen viktorianischen Garten mit umlaufender Mauer anlegen. Für die Gegend war Mitchell Henry sehr bedeutend, sein Anwesen hat ihn dann letzten Endes doch in den Ruin getrieben, so dass das Gelände Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts mehrmals den Besitzer wechselte und immer mehr verfiel, bis es 1920 von den Benediktiner-Nonnen gekauft wurde, die aus ihrer belgischen Abtei nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg fliehen mussten. Noch heute befindet sich das Anwesen im Besitz der Nonnen, die bis zum Jahr 2010 eine Mädchenschule von Weltruhm leiteten. Wegen "veränderten sozialen Verhältnissen" wurde der Schulbetrieb eingestellt. Auch eine nette Umschreibung für "Kirchenskandal". Das imposanteste ist aber wohl der Blick auf das Schloss, das unerschütterlich am Ufer des Pollacappall Lough liegt.

Instead we spent some time on the abbey's ground. The estate was first built in the middle of the 19th century by the Londoner Mitchell Henry after he and his wife fell in love with the region of Connemara. His wife passed away only a few years after completion of the main castle and her ashes were buried in the mausoleum. In memory of his late wife Henry built a neo-Gothic cathedral. Part of the estate was also a massive Victorian walled garden. Mitchell Henry was very important for the whole region even though his estate was his own financial ruin in the end. At the beginning of the 20th century the property changed its owner a couple of times and decayed with everyone of them a little more. In 1920 the estate was finally purchased by the nuns of Benedictine order who had to flea their abbey in Belgium after World War One. They still own it at present and until 2010 they led a prestigious international renown girls school. The school had to shut down due to "social changes" just another nice description for "church scandal". The most impressive thing however is probably the very well known view at the abby that lays immovable at the bank of Pollacappall Lough.

Im Anschluss daran sind wir noch ein Stück weiter nach Clifden gefahren, einer typisch irischen Kleinstadt, dessen Ortskern man in wenigen Minuten erkundet haben kann. Das aus unserer Sicht einzig wirklich lohnenswerte an Clifden ist die Sky Road, eine 11km Panorama-Rundstraße westlich des eigentlichen Ortes, an der auch die Ruinen des Clifden Castle liegen. Wenn man sich halb in Lebensgefahr begibt bekommt man auch den richtigen Winkel für ein schönes Foto hin. Ansonsten kann man auf der Sky Road wieder einmal die atemberaubende Schönheit des Wild Atlantic Way bestaunen.

Afterwards we decided to drive a little further to Clifden, a typical Irish small town. It won't take you more than just a few minutes to discover the city centre. If you ask us, the only point of interest in Clifden is Sky Road, a panoramic road of 11km length just outside Clifden. There you will find the ruins of Clifden Castle (you will have to risk your life for the perfect angle for a nice picture) as well as several view points where you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way once again.
